Japanese Delegation Visits Hull Heat Network to Explore Low-Carbon Future

Hull welcomed a delegation of Japanese officials to the city to learn about the Hull Heat Network, one of Hull City Council’s largest ever infrastructure projects. 

Representatives from the Japan Finance Organization for Municipalities (JFM) visited Hull on Wednesday 9 September to discover how the network will deliver low-carbon heating and hot water to city centre buildings. 

JFM is a joint funding organisation established under Japanese law and owned by local governments across Japan. The organisation supports sustainable communities and works to strengthen the financial resilience of municipalities. 

The visit was organised by the National Wealth Fund and provided the opportunity to share knowledge between the UK and Japan in delivering sustainable energy infrastructure. 

Tony Walsh, National Wealth Fund Managing Director, Regional Project Accelerator, said: “The Hull Heat Network is a strong example of the kind of practical, place-based infrastructure that can make a real difference by helping authorities cut both carbon emissions and running costs. 

“We were pleased to support this visit and share learning with JFM on how public investment can help accelerate the delivery of sustainable energy projects like this across the UK.” 

During their visit, delegates were provided with an overview of the Hull Heat Network, including the project's background, key milestones to date, and future ambitions.  

Vital Energi, who will be responsible for designing, building, maintaining and operating the Hull Heat Network, also presented information on their involvement in the project. 

Mike Worrall, Project Director for Vital Energi said: "We were pleased to welcome representatives from the JFM to the Hull Heat Network, providing an opportunity to showcase the progress being made on the project and discuss the role heat networks can play in supporting the global energy transition.  

“The strong international interest in projects such as Hull demonstrates the growing recognition of heat networks as an important part of the energy transition." 

Guests were introduced to the Energy Centre, currently under construction on Trippett Street, to see progress first-hand and understand how the network will operate.  

Discussions also explored the benefits of the Hull Heat Network, including how it will support Hull's net zero ambitions, improve air quality, and create opportunities for future growth as the network expands across the city.  

Councillor Charles Quinn, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Hull City Council, said: "The Hull Heat Network demonstrates how Hull is investing in practical, sustainable infrastructure.  

“We are proud to showcase the progress being made and the long-term benefits the network will bring for residents, businesses and public buildings."
