The University of Hull is delighted to welcome Professor Tom Lawson, who has officially begun his role as Vice-Chancellor.

A highly respected historian, Professor Lawson brings extensive experience of senior leadership in higher education and a strong track record of building research excellence, widening access and expanding opportunity.

Professor Lawson said: “I am hugely proud to be joining the University of Hull at such an important moment in its history. This is an institution with a strong sense of purpose, deep civic roots and a growing reputation for research and innovation that makes a real difference to people’s lives.

“As we approach our centenary, we have a powerful opportunity not only to reflect on past achievements, but to look forward with confidence and ambition. From world-leading developments such as the Wound Innovation Institute to our work in mental health and addiction, alongside impactful research in palliative care, social justice and clean energy, Hull is demonstrating how universities can tackle global challenges while delivering real impact for local communities.

“My priority is to build on these strengths, working with our staff, students and partners to drive excellence in education, expand opportunity, and ensure that the University continues to play a leading role in the region’s economic and social development.

“This is a university that changes lives, in a city bursting with creativity and pride. I look forward to helping the University continue to harness Hull’s defiant spirit to generate opportunity and aspiration for all.”

Professor Lawson comes to Hull from Northumbria University where he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, leading the University’s planning process and strategy delivery. During his time at Northumbria, Professor Lawson played a pivotal role in its transformation into a research-intensive modern university. He is a historian of the Holocaust and more recently of colonial genocides.
